Biography

David Robins has spent much of his life chasing things that refuse to stand still: light, weather, mountains, cities, ideas, and occasionally himself. Born in Hampton, Virginia, he moved to Colorado as a teenager and promptly developed an affection for alpine skiing that proved far more persuasive than higher education. After a year of college, he abandoned the classroom for the slopes of Vail, where he spent seven years pursuing snow with a level of commitment usually reserved for religion.

Eventually, good judgment caught up with him. He returned to Colorado State University, earned a degree in Fine Arts, and began what would become a twenty-five-year academic career in library and information science. Along the way, he acquired a deep appreciation for both observation and inquiry—useful habits for a photographer.

Today, Robins photographs landscapes and urban scenes, though his images are less concerned with documenting a place than with capturing a moment of recognition. He is drawn to the quiet conversation between form and feeling, where light, shadow, line, and shape become something unexpectedly personal.

His photographs remind us that the world is constantly offering small revelations to anyone willing to pay attention. Fortunately, David Robins has spent a lifetime doing exactly that.

Artist Statement

I draw inspiration from a passage by Thich Nhat Hanh in The Art of Living: "There are wonders of life we walk past every day, and yet we haven’t truly seen them. What is the cypress tree on the path you take to work every day? If you cannot even see the tree, how can you see your loved ones? How can you see God?"
